WiFi Help & Troubleshooting Guide: Common Issues & Fixes | Liveport

SUPPORT, TROUBLESHOOTING

WiFi troubleshooting, common issues, real fixes.

If you’re a Liveport customer, ring us first, we’d rather solve it for you. If you’re triaging before you call, this guide covers the seven issues that account for roughly 80% of WiFi support requests across our 150+ Australian properties.

01

Device won’t connect to the network at all.

Symptom

You select the WiFi network, enter the password, and the connection either fails immediately or hangs on “obtaining IP address” forever.

Cause

The most common cause is a stuck IP lease on the access point or a captive portal that didn’t authorize the MAC. About 70% of “can’t connect” tickets we triage are one of these two.

Quick check

Forget the network on your device, toggle WiFi off and on, then try again. If you’re on a managed property using Liveport Gateway, also try connecting from a different device. If a second device works and the first still fails, the issue is on the device, restart it.

When to escalate

Still failing on multiple devices in the same area? It’s an AP or auth issue. Call us.

02

Speeds are much slower than expected.

Symptom

Pages load slowly, video buffers, speed tests show a fraction of the advertised plan.

Cause

Slow WiFi is almost never the internet plan. It’s usually one of three things: too many devices on the same channel (co-channel interference), the device is on the 2.4 GHz band when 5 GHz is available, or the AP is too far away and you’re at -75 dBm or worse.

Quick check

Run a speed test on a wired device first. If wired is fast and WiFi is slow, the bottleneck is wireless. Move within line of sight of the nearest AP and re-test. If the speed jumps significantly when you move closer, you have a coverage gap.

When to escalate

Wired matches plan but WiFi is consistently slow across the property? Time for a site survey.

03

Connection drops every few minutes.

Symptom

WiFi works for a while, then disconnects. Reconnects on its own, then drops again. Video calls and streaming are unusable.

Cause

Frequent disconnects almost always come from one of: failing AP power supply, channel interference from a neighbour’s network, or the device sticking to a far-away AP instead of roaming to a closer one (“sticky client”).

Quick check

Check whether the drops happen in the same physical spot or anywhere on the property. If it’s one spot, that’s a coverage or AP hardware issue. If it’s everywhere, look at the device, update its WiFi driver or replace the network adapter.

When to escalate

Drops happening across multiple devices in the same building? Don’t keep restarting things. Call.

04

Some sites won’t load, the rest work fine.

Symptom

WhatsApp works, email works, but a specific banking site or video service won’t load. Or one app on your phone hangs while everything else is fine.

Cause

This is a DNS, MTU, or content-filtering issue, almost never a WiFi issue. On managed networks, content filtering can block specific categories. Some apps are blocked by guest network policies on hotels and student accommodation.

Quick check

Try the same site over mobile data (turn WiFi off on your phone). If it works on mobile but not WiFi, it’s a network policy or DNS problem on the WiFi. If it fails on both, the site itself is the issue.

When to escalate

If a site you legitimately need is blocked on a managed property, ask reception or the property manager, they can request an allowlist update from us.

05

The login page (captive portal) doesn’t appear.

Symptom

You connect to the WiFi network, but the login splash screen never shows up. Browsers say “no internet” but the WiFi icon shows connected.

Cause

Captive portals work by intercepting your first HTTPS request. Modern browsers and OS versions sometimes cache previous authorisations or fail the captive portal check. Apple devices in particular cache aggressively.

Quick check

Open a browser and go to a plain HTTP site like neverssl.com or http://example.com. That should force the portal to appear. On iOS, going to Settings > WiFi > tap the network > scrolling down often re-triggers the portal.

When to escalate

Portal still doesn’t appear after trying neverssl.com? That’s a portal config issue. Call support.

06

Password is rejected even though it’s correct.

Symptom

You type the WiFi password exactly as printed and the device refuses to authenticate.

Cause

On managed networks (PBSA, BTR, hotels), the “password” is often a one-time access code tied to your room number or booking. They expire. They’re case-sensitive. And the printed code sometimes uses characters that look identical (zero vs O, one vs lowercase L).

Quick check

Re-type the code carefully on a different device. If it works on device B but not device A, the device is at fault, forget the network and re-add it. If it fails on both, the code has expired or is wrong.

When to escalate

Code clearly correct and still rejected on multiple devices? It’s a server-side auth issue. Call.

07

Dead zones, WiFi works in some rooms, not others.

Symptom

Strong signal in the lobby, kitchen, common areas. Nothing in the back bedroom, basement, or far end of the corridor.

Cause

Coverage gaps usually come from APs being mounted in the wrong place, typically too close together at the front of the building, with nothing for the back half. Construction materials matter too: brick, concrete, foil-backed insulation and lift shafts all kill 5 GHz WiFi.

Quick check

Walk the property with a WiFi analyser app on your phone (Apple AirPort Utility on iOS, WiFi Analyzer on Android). If the signal at the dead spot is below -70 dBm, that’s the problem.

When to escalate

Confirmed dead zones in occupied areas? You need a site survey. We do these every week, Ekahau Pro, real RF measurements, vendor-neutral report.
