A question we get a lot, and you may have been asking yourself, is “What’s the difference between Broadband and Bandwidth?”, and “How much speed do I need for my property?”

Let’s have a look and see if we can help answer them for you.

Bandwidth: This refers to speed of your internet or, more specifically, the amount of data that can be transferred to or from your computer in a specific amount of time. The amount of data is measured in kilobits per second (kbps) or megabits per second (mbps).

This is extremely important because it’s the first thing people notice when using your network. If you’re lucky and you have access to the NBN you can see downloads up in the 100 Mbps and uploads as high as 100 Mbps!

Is your internet connection fast? Or is it slow? A great way to find out your Bandwidth is by doing a Speed Test (see right) at: This will show you your Upload/Download speeds.

Broadband: When people talk about “Broadband” they are really talking about the ability of your Internet Service Provider to transmit data (the internet) to, and from, you. Think of this as simply a highway with cars on it. The wider the highway, the more cars that can travel on it. On the other hand, if you have 100 cars trying to go down a one lane road (similar to 100 guests using a single internet connection at a hotel) you will have a bottleneck, causing everyone to slow down (or have slow internet speeds).

What Bandwidth should I get for my property?

In 2018, we are seeing far more people using streaming services such as Netflix, YouTube, and Twitch. Some hotels are even seeing as high as 50% of the data downloaded being from Netflix alone! We like to suggest for hotels to get the fastest connection that is affordable. But as a rough indication, for a 20-50 room hotel, a 50/50mbps connection from your ISP might be sufficient. However, we always like to suggest businesses to get a 100/100mbps connection that is a dedicated business line, so you are not sharing with the neighbourhood.

We hope these descriptions have helped you understand more about internet terminology! If you have any questions or concerns flip over to the “Contact us” page and send us a note! We’d love to hear from you!
